I don't think as a permanent race, but on the PVP server they did have a period where you could play NPC's in certain zones. I think one of the zones had gnolls in it.

Project M! It had such potential, but when I played it I really couldn't do much of anything. It kept giving me level 1-2 characters. If you got a lvl 3 you were excited. In hindsight, getting a mob in the right zone with a friend to PL you could have been fucking hilarious. I believe friend could charm/buff you and give you things as pet. Zones like Feerrott could let you, theoretically, level fairly high.
