You can buy a whole chicken and prep it yourself making stock and smaltz from the bones and scraps. Add in some oats. And collards. Or something else green and organic or homegrown and you can pretty much eat for a whole weak on $20 really healthy food. That's pretty expensive tho and doesn't account for fuel.

I bought a crappy chicken for $11 and Iiterally got 14+ servings of protein out of it.

Rice and beans are another great staple you can stretch out a long way and keep fine without preservatives.
