Russia has been advancing north of Bakhmut, around Soledar and Krasna Hora for the past couple of days.
I believe Ukraine holds the high ground in the southern part of Bakhmut and maybe the Russians are trying to avoid that and planning on attacking the city from the north?
My Field General license expired last month, so I'm not sure.
