All that other stuff about “doing the right thing” would apply splendidly if they had been up front and correct.
Something along the lines of:
“We honestly can’t claim any rights here according to a strict reading of the rules. However, we’d appreciate it greatly if you respected the time we’ve put in, and all that jazz, and would consider it a personal favor. And would really be just a swell thing for you to do.”
Ok. People act is sociable and respectful manner - yes do them any favor you can muster from your overflow of personal strength of character.
But in this case? Misleading and guilt tripping? Burn em. That kind of anti-social behaviors need to be discouraged. Not enabled.
