It kind of depends on how many components you have in place already, or if this is a completely new build. If you have a case, optical drive, display, power supply etc already, then you just might be able to get away with $300 on a new mobo, CPU, RAM and HD. If you're talking a whole new rig, then saving up a bit more will indeed be necessary.
