Should use color slant at breaks not mez+distance
I don't think mez+distance is the best method. It's often not an option in the most serious of places. However I use it often in larger outdoor zones. Below are some of my preferred methods.

1) Duel a Druid/Ranger have them ensnare your pet at will. Ensnare lasts ~13 minutes. This works especially well on monsters that you can't mez or stun. You will have to back pet off manually. This will help you manage charm breaks much easier, especially in an indoor zone where you don't have SOW.

2) Color slant/skew right after the mob begins attacking you.

3) Color slant/skew at the perfect range where your stun lands but the mob is out of melee range. This requires practice (a decent amount). Also, know your location indirect pathing can mess up the timing on this. You DO NOT want to get caught missing your stun (out of range). It's better to cast later than earlier when your life depends on it landing.

4) Mez + distance can be an option in areas where you have abundant space.
