At worst an Ogre might have about 350 HP on you as a Dark Elf. It's not as big as it sounds when you're probably all buffing to around 5K life in lower-end gear with full buffs on. The large races' edge will start to decline as they start capping stamina.

For those rare few encounters you need max health you could use the 25 STA alchemy potions for an easy 125 HP. That can close some of the gap. With respect to equipment, what can you obtain and how much do you want to spend?

--Ear slots are hard to fill with very good items without spending a lot. Pearly Sarnak Bauble is nice but it isn't cheap. Black sapphire electrum or earrings of essence remain fairly standard for non-raiders.
--Neck, a +6 dragon talisman is about standard. Maybe a Collar of the Storm if you happen to go Kael faction.
--Face, figure you'll usually use either Crystal Spider Eyes/Enshrouded Veil or Eyepatch of Plunder
--Lot of helm options, too many to list. Most folks want a Crown of narandi if you have a stack of cash and don't mind no-helm look. If you want a visible helm you'll probably wind up with one of the faction quest helms.
--6/65 rings are pretty standard unless you want to spend a lot of time trying to obtain Coldain or Chardok rings.
--Bracer of Benevolence is nice if you want to spend the time, otherwise Silver Chitin will have to do. Spirit Wracked Cords are great for the wrist slot if you have lots of time.
--Not a lot of good lower-end arms. Might have to make do with Crystal Chitin. Thurgadin sleeves have no HP, but Skyshrine sleeves do.
--Blood Runed Gauntlets are good and group-obtainable (duo if you're good).
--Dragon shoulders from west wastes are your standard HP/mana shoulders. Strength of Elements is nice if you have unlimited time.
--Velious faction quest armor is pretty standard for chest/legs. Thurgadin armor is most cost-effective if you're MQ'ing. Blood Ember is a decent alternative but with weaker stats. Queen's Carapace is great for HP.
--Black Bear Pelt cloak is common, otherwise Hiero cloak is a slight upgrade for a lot more cost
--Belt is usually going to be some sort of haste item. Runebranded Girdle is the most HP of the common options but a little less haste than some of the others.
--Barbed Dragonscale Boots are cheap and high health for the slot.
--Idol of the Thorned is a good cheap range slot item. Othmir totem is more HP but dramatically more expensive.
--Ashenbone shield is a nice (typically free) item for padding HP. Can pair it with a HP-adding 1H, even a cheap one like a Lamentation since if you're grouped nobody cares how much melee damage you're doing. Odds are you're using a 2H when you want to deal damage.

That about sums up the most common HP-based options that you have a fair chance of either buying or camping yourself with no more than a group and which won't necessarily take massive amounts of time to obtain.
