I found that I would fight like a hybrid melee class until level 24 when the new spells ramp up in power and I felt like a caster until level 34 when I got a pet and I went back to melee and this time meleeing everything stuck as slow becomes more powerful each time you level. If you're going toe to toe with the mobs then buff up your stats like hp, strength, dex, agi, stamina and always have regen on.
