Post Any suggestions for a new old player?

Returning EQ'er installing EQ-P1999 as I type. Very excited to get back to play this game I loved so much almost 20 years ago! Any suggestions for a new old player? Hope to see you all soon inside!

Any melee class will be a lot more difficult than a caster, and you can improve how the game runs by following this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArLNnN0GwfQ

At this point in each server timeline, groups are pretty hard to come by. There's pretty much 1 zone in each level range that has grouping options, and even then - it depends on the play time.

For your first toon, make something that is self-sufficient. Cleric, Warrior, Rogue will be pretty tough to level solo without some starting gear..

I'd recommend either shaman, necro or druid as your first class. Which server are you playing on?

Play something you remember fondly, and consider playing something you never played back in 1999.

A new class perspective makes the game feel brand new, even in 2025 ^^

If you're around East Commonlands there's usually people in the tunnel who will buff you. Some might even seek you out with a free item for your class [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I read that last part as “ask you out” and I was like wow no one ever asks me out in the tunnel [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

It all depends on what you like and what you want, but ignoring that aspect I have to agree that for a first toon you are likely best served with a cloth caster as they are a lot cheaper to gear early on when you don't have any resources. I'm partial to the mage because malachite is comparatively cheap and you can pick every pet spell up at a shop until, what, the early 20s?
