Yeah IIRC during Luclin the top guild was struggling on VT trash and my guild, which was second or third best guild on server, was still struggling on vindi with like 80 people. A lot of guilds did kunark dragons and other bosses but back then there was a gazillion guilds where like, getting a circlet of the falinkan was a serious undertaking. Basically RL friends messing around. Epics were getting more common but not many people were doing cutting edge raiding. P99 players are light years ahead of what live was for the same era.
Even though I was probably like 15-16 years old at the time, I remember feeling like my parents had wasted money when they bought Scars of Velious because I hardly ever went to the place, was still spending a lot of time in Sol B and Kunark dungeons. I remember vividly looting a Woven Shadow helmet and being super excited about it the night before Luclin launched, and then being excited how it had deer antlers on the new model! Looked completely different than before ! But that's pretty crazy because I was still raiding the Plane of Hate for actual upgrades... when Luclin launched, and I wasn't a small minority on my server. In fact, a lot of people considered me to be the best geared rogue on the server at the time.

I do know shortly after Luclin came out though I did finally start raiding in Velious as the top guild on our server started trying to do VT, leaving NTOV open and what not.

I don't think I bought Velious until Legacy of Ykesha was out. Definitely I didn't have it by PoP. If I wanted to kill creatures, orcs, gnolls, giants or eaten by a dragon in the snow I had the Halas area! And besides, the sub 40 game was where it was at.

The only game I can recall playing that actually did this was Asheron's Call. I think it was every month they would change the "migration" patterns of the mobs and old safe areas became dangerous and so forth. Their loot was also pretty much all random anyway. Only a very select items were actual named items. That said, the community in that game was pretty ass since it was mostly solo people exploring the expanse alone. It's why I always bounced back and forth between AC and EQ.
Asheron's Call was vastly superior to EQ in every facet except for "raid" content.

Imagine an MMO model in 2025 where major expansion packs were optional, but hardly required, for the vast majority of the player-base. JUST IMAGINE.

Doesn't compute to me that it would be possible to continue playing without having the latest expansion considering those droppable items made their way into the market.

But yeah back in classic live I only stepped foot in antonica and kunark, never went to velious and played through Luclin and I believe PoP release (stopped when there was a large exodus of people after EQ2 and WoW were announced/released).

Back then I never guilded. Naggy and Vox were open raids for all 52s on server which were organized by a handful of folks (that I assisted with). I remember a Vox raid taking a couple of hours typically from when Vox spawned until the word got out accross the server that anyone with a 52 should head over to permafrost, then clearing basically the entire zone so we didn't train ourselves, then spending prolly 30 minutes in OOC/Shout spewing out raid instructions to everyone, then going in and making an attempt.

I was able to complete my entire bard epic minus phinny which was really only being killed by raiding guilds with 1-2 groups of people and the loot was still rare enough that they weren't entertaining any type of loot right or MQ opportunity for a tagless bard.

I don't want to bash AC since I never played it, but the reason I'm going to lean towards this being inaccurate is because I knew several people IRL who bought Asheron's Call after playing EQ and they all quit AC within 2 weeks and came back to EQ despite never raiding in EQ.

ya if you quit AC in 2 weeks you didnt play the game - thats like bashing orcs naked and coming back and saying eq sucks

i played AC from early 2000 to 2005...was a heck of a lot better than anything p99
