Default Us poor saps with bad connections

Hopefully one of the techie guys reads this...

I've noticed a strong correlation between people having zoning and character select crash issues (like me) and slow or awful connections to the internet period. I've also noticed that I have a far easier time zoning and logging in if I am logging into zones that do not have much in the way of people in them.

I just had to have a character moved twice because I couldn't get past character select. Trying to log into Overthere, which has lots of people - crashed every time. Was moved by the friendly guide to Dagnor's Cauldron, which had two people - logged in almost instantly. Or maybe not the other players, but the sheer number of mobs that the client will be tracking?

Could it be the server is not giving connections like mine, which is run off a satellite and has 800 ping and almost certainly some packet loss, time to sort itself out connecting to the server? As in, if the server was just more patient in letting things get through the connection, this zoning and character select problem would go away?

This problem is almost at the point of forcing me off the server, and I love the server too much to want that to happen.

Any help from the guys who can make magic happen?
