Default No 3d Devices.

Did a search and found a lot of garbled information about the possible problems, but thought I would ask if there is a more general solution available.
When trying to start Everquest I get the error "No 3d devices found". dxdiag says everything is okay, and my card is listed in device manager as functioning properly. Sometimes i can reboot and this problem is resolved. I'm currently trying an uninstall/reinstall to see if the resolves the problem. Any solutions?

Reinstall did nothing, still receiving error.
WinEQ2 remedied the problem, although I'm dubious to pay for it....

There are some issues with it, including the inability to run fullscreen, but its a work around, not a fix...
