Default Tank Class?

It's been a LONG time since I've played. Are Shadow Knights acceptable as tanks? I played a warrior from launch to PoP and remember thinking SK's could solo and tank and that would be nice.

Shadow Knights make fine tanks and you will be able to solo better than a warrior.

Pick Warrior if you want to join a big guild and eventually be the main tank for really high-end raids. That's what the class is for.

Pick a hybrid tank for everything else, including the entire leveling game, group game, and most the lower-end raids. Shadow Knight serves well if you want to be a primary tank type while maintaining some degree of solo capability. Note that the class, during this era (Velious), does NOT solo as well as it did during later game eras.

If you intend to solo, pick iksar or troll as your race. Regeneration will be a big plus while soloing.

This is good advice but I would like to also suggest erudite. You'll be blind and weak for awhile but you will have boat loads of Mana. Also the paineel newbie area with warrens as you get higher are really great starting areas. Warrens has bronze weapons and some leather type armor so really can be a perfect place (if you don't mind being solo) to start out..

Like the others have said if you want to be the MT in end game raids warrior is the way to go but for the rest of the game SK will be more effective especially if you want to solo.
