Default Trading Conduct Question

Hey Guys,

Barny here. Thanks for the response to my last question. I do have another.

Lately, during my auctions in EC, buyers will place, for example, 180p in the window, when the advertised price was 200p. It was not an agreed upon discount beforehand and I'm wondering if this is common practice, frowned upon, etc.? How does the community generally view this practice?

Thanks,
Barny

Sounds like scammer trying it on, hoping you wont check the amount.

Always check before confirming trade....

also (and I haven't experienced this on 1999, but years playing Eve has trained me to check), but make sure the item you are buying is the correct one, not a crappy one with the same graphic icon.

Honestly, if someone did that to me and it looked like it could be an honest mistake (eg. the agreed upon amount was 200 but they put 20) I'd cancel the trade and wait for the right amount. If they made the same "mistake" again, or if the number couldn't have been an accident (eg. 180 for 200) I'd refuse to trade with them. Maybe] I'd change my mind if they gave me a story about buying another item at the same time for 180 and getting confused, IF I could see said item for sale for 180 in the auction chat logs ... but otherwise tough luck.

But that being said, the worst I've ever seen personally, after about four years on this server, is the accidental 20 instead of 200 kind of trade, and everyone fixes it immediately once I cancel the trade.

It's probably a slimy way of attempting to get a discount.

A lot of people at the tunnel grow impatient when selling and I'd imagine a lot of people would think "eh, fuck it...I just want to get rid of it" and click trade.

Not me though, I'm stubborn as hell.

I recently bought an AC and SoS for my monk alt and a seller was trying to get me for 13k and I said I'd do it for 10.5k and he laughed at me.

Ten minutes later, I paid someone else 10k.

You gotta out-patience the Tunnel Questers.

There are some extraordinarily greedy players out there who do nothing but spend time in the tunnel and do not understand the concept of haggling, especially useful for new players with only one character on a server, without hundreds of thousands of platinum in the bank.

Thanks all. I appreciate the feedback. I just want to remain in good-standing in the community and see what conduct is socially acceptable, or not. I appreciate the insight.

I do this all the time. Haggling and negotiating is severely lacking from the EC game. This isn’t WoW there isn’t an AH and all prices are negotiable. If you want to spend 2 hours in EC to make that 20pp difference then that’s on you.
What OP is describing isn't haggling, that would require a back and forth. If you just open the trade window without comment, that's an unspoken agreement that the price I've stated is fair and that you agree to my terms. Trying to go underhanded and hoping they don't notice or fight you on it is predatory and slimy behavior.

Predatory? Close the window and reiterate the price. It’s 100% a haggling/negotiating tactic. It’s similar to showing up to buy a car with cash. Throw the cash down in front of
Them to entice a quick sale.
If I said the car is $20,000 and you say I will buy it and throw a pile of cash on the table and it is actually $18,000 you are a scumbag and that is what would be akin to this situation b/c you are clearly leading me to believe you will pay my price by saying you will buy it then trying to get me to make a mistake and not notice you underpaid compared to the agreed upon price.
