Default Until early 2000, buffs on pets (and NPCs) lasted 3x longer than on PCs

Looks like buffs continued to last 3x longer on NPCs, but were adjusted to not last so long on pets. (The idea was to decrease server load, and pets got caught up in it since they were NPC flagged).

Seems like this nerf was in early 2000-ish?

The bolded bit is from Abashi.

This came of the official EverQuest message boards.

...

4) At some point there was a silent change in that damage shields cast on pets do not last 3x as long as on people anymore (which hurts your mana efficiency a bit when soloing). I had always thought that the effect was a bug (as damage shields last forever on most mobs), but a silent nerf like this is still a bit disheartening. Was that the case ?

NPCs were treating buff spells differently than PCs. The point was to keep NPCs in cities from constantly casting buffs on everyone and everything. Though this part of the code was maintained, special code was put in so that buffs would wear off of pets at the proper time. We probably should have announced this.

Would also suggest that buffs cast on NPCs should still be lasting 3x as long as other buffs.

Corroboration from the newsgroups:

No, the change was because buffs on pets were using the NPC duration code. The
idea was that buffs on pure NPCs would last a long, long time, so that you
wouldn't have to listen to the constant racket as magic-user NPCs replaced all
their buffs all the time. Pets were using the same code, and buffs like Burnout
were lasting for a long time. Verant changed this, because pets were "supposed"
to lose their buffs at the same rate as their player. Now buffs last just as
long for pets as they do for players, not less.

It couldn't have been changed *too* long before April 2000 because here are people still talking about DS lasting longer on mage pets on April 20th 2000:

A druid needs to straighten this out. In summary, a mage damage shield will
always hit harder than any other. It provides some fire resistance as well.
It lasts about 5 minutes on a mage pet and 2 minutes on anyone else.

Somewhere between 2.5-3x normal PC duration based on the two mentions so far.
