I re-activated my Everquest Live account.

I decided to see what the progression servers were like. Ugh. You can buy an item for $3 that makes enchanter pets work like any other pet. I don't care about ornamentation for weapons or exp potions, but this is a game breaking feature. At least, it would be if I hadn't rolled an enchanter. I'm gonna box a Druid as well and use them to PL every other class. It's super easy mode.

I plan to eventually be my own guild.

Boredom gets expensive. I cancelled already. Im gonna play a bit. I've not seen all the changes they made to the old world, so I figure there are some things worth checking out.

They really should make new character models. Luclin models are ass for most races (elves and ogres being the exceptions).

EQLive isn't EQ anymore sadly.

I am sorry that the drugs lead you down such a terrible path of darkness.

Continue with the play by play so we can all be thankful that we're not missing anything by not paying a monthly subscription anymore.

This

I rolled a SK for the shits and giggles of it. I hit level 50 in a matter of a few days with hardly any time played.

Defiant armor makes any character fucking ridiculous. 600DD poison potions (poison your weapon) make damage ridiculous. Mercenaries for hire makes the entire game even more ridiculous.

It became a game of 'hey, what old world boss should I solo today'?

Zzzzz

Oh no, sorry.. should have been more detailed. I played when SoD (the merc expansion) came out on a normal server.

AFAIK there is none of that on pregression.. but still heaps of retarded things were left in.

For example.. monk fist damage is apparently still on the new damage table, which just happens to be fucking insane.

@khanable
Monks are one of the least played classes at the moment. I guess everyone is waiting for kunark. I was gonna roll one up, but with a weapon upgrade being impossible until PoP, I decided against it.

When I play melees, I love to get new weapons.

I was going to play on the progression server when it opened up but just decided against it. Every time I go back to live I'm disappointed. Just playing project 1999 for the past 2 days has been more of a nostalgic and enjoyable experience than anytime I've resubbed to regular EQ. I had a 5 man group on Orc Hill for 2 hours yesterday morning and it was the most fun I've had in some time. I'm really excited to be here.

I played on the very much NOT promoted Trakanon server (progression's predecessor) and did the whole levelling thing using hotzones and merc. I navigated around with PoK books which are obviously everywhere and made 68ish in no time as a shaman.

All was going great, some good camps, good people... the server was actually enjoyable if a complete departure from classic EQ. Population was an issue though, because they hadn't promoted the server the level of interest wasn't really there, and a couple of months later - it was integrated into Tunare and Trakanon given its marching orders, shortly after they had closed down the Mayong 51/50 server (start at level 51 with 50 AAs). That was the last straw for me with live, too much screwing around and Sony are clearly just trying to milk a game in its twilight by adding real money purchases.

Highlights were getting my shaman epic (v1) which was fun in itself, and the people I met along the way. With the server gone though this is the only place to be - well away from Sony.

The other day I found out that exp isn't cut and split on the progression servers. So if you make 10 experience solo you will also make 10 experience in groups, no matter what. The experience rate is dependent on the kill rate. This means that you no longer have to sit alone in a zone because nobody wanted to invite you. They said you were redundant. Or they said that you would drain them. This won't happen now because filling up more slots is ALWAYS better than not. This was the way it was on Shadowbane years ago. I liked it. I always thought this would be nice to see in EQ and what do you know? Here it is!

This actually has me interested somewhat. The only problem is I'd need to spend $40 for the expansion and another $15 on top. I know it's a lot easier than p1999, but playing on live is so much different versus playing elsewhere. It's something that can't be reproduced anywhere else. Live IS live.

Only trouble is that if you prefer soloing and refuse to group then these changes might frustrate you. I can see that. But if there's a person in the zone that can group with you and you choose not to then that's your choice. Since there's no drain anymore then inviting them won't reduce the experience a single bit. There's no excuse not to. As long as there's no competition you can sit back and even play separately and still get more experience than you otherwise would. Soloers could make a solo channel and all join each other and as long as they're within range they'll get each others experience and level up faster.

This might be a good time for them to explore the idea of increasing the range so that soloers can group with each other and still solo but still get more experience than they would alone. Right now if you're outside this range anybody in your group won't get the experience. Works against the interests of soloers.

Furthermore, necros and druids and other solo-preferred classes were designed for soloing and in groups they're not as good. Dots aren't as effective in groups, for example. And a rangers healing is redundant. Necro's and druids have a lot of dots. So even if a solo class likes to group they're not as effective at it as say a warrior and cleric. But if they play separately they can probably maximize their efficiency. The problem is that the current system greatly favors reliant classes so necros and others like them feel a bit ignored.

How would you like to always play at 80%? That's what it's like for a necro in a group. Their dots are always overshooting and thus wasting mana. They don't use all their abilities. They use spells that're not mana-efficient - like direct damage. Their pet can't compare to a player. It's perpetual inferiority.

Soloing, a necro can't be beat. That's when they're at their best. This system hurts them because the benefits of grouping greatly outweigh the benefits of soloing and they'll be condemned to inferiority.
