1Hand VS 2 Hand

I’m very new to Everquest. I have a 11 Necromancer and and I’ll be starting a Barbarian Warrior this week. Can someone explain to me the difference between using 1 handed weapons and 2 handed weapons and why I would want to use one over the other? I’m talking strictly dps, I understand I will want to use a shield when I’m tanking for a group. Also, how am I able to get some decent starter gear (mainly a weapon) for my warrior? I have a 1h rusty bastard sword and a 2 hand rusty sword and a handful of large leather armor for my warrior. In game necro name is Shoopuf. Thanks guys!
