Default How well can Ranger solo if twinked well?

Was wondering if you twinked a Ranger w/ really nice stuff, would they be able to solo level / high DPS on par as other melee classes?

You'll need a shit ton of arrows and a tolan's bracer after 45 (or 46?). Root -> shoot method plus dots once you get them. Just takes awhile to kill mobs.

Their DPS will probably never match that of a monk or rogue even if well geared. Then again this isn't world of warcraft, so who gives a fuck about a DPS parse. Play what you like.

Not well enough after 30. Even with a fungi and/or pre-nerf fungi staff it would take some time to kill mobs.

I solo'ed at least half of the time on the way to 49 on my ranger and that was without Kunark gear until level 40.

With good gear, melee -> heal -> med is more efficient than root - shoot or snare - shoot until lvl ~45.

With really good gear it's probably that way to 51 but I wouldn't know.

Beyond that stuff just hits too hard to solo much in melee range. Maybe if you have fungi tunic + fungi staff + CoF + Tash sticks and Swarmcaller w/ 255 dex + ridiculous other weapons/gear you could solo to 60. But you'd still ding 60 later than a Monk with like 3k in gear most likely...

Rangers don't have Fear Animal line in Kunark yet? If they do, you can easily level to 58 solo.

The closest you'll get to soloing efficiently at a high level is probably between level 40-45, soloing lancer swordfish in Kedge Keep for fairly good XP. But they nerfed the ZEM there, so I don't know how it is anymore. Well-twinked, you could probably hold your own in Sol B and L Guk against non-casters.

After that, your best bet is to stay outdoors in order to have plenty of room to kite/snare/root/dot/flee... so you'll have to go to Kunark. And shit there just hits way too hard for straight up melee, so you'll have to resort to arrow kiting or root/rot. If you choose the former, as said above, you absolutely need a Tolan's Bracer to make this effective. If you choose the latter, do yourself a favor now and work on your Conjuration skill with Dance of Fireflies every chance you get, so you aren't fizzle x 20 when you finally get Drones of Doom.

Once epics come out, things will be a bit better in the solo department with 40% item haste and 50% slow proc. If you're able, get a Dark Cloak of the Sky once the Sky upgrades happen for 50% spell haste. I would imagine that'll help your solo prospects quite a bit.

Otherwise, you're honestly better off finding a class that can cast Fear, and duoing for near zero downtime... it'll be worth the XP split over a long time horizon.

Panic Animal is added to the ranger spell line-up in Velious.

Depends on the level of twinking. With everything money can buy, including fungi and CoF and the best marketable weapons etc., you can solo to 50 without any particular trouble, and would be able to push it to mid-50s or possibly even 60 if you're stubborn. It'd be easy until 40ish, completely doable until 50, and challenging and a bit slow after 50. This is with just straight up killing mobs; you can pretty much forget about archery for leveling, because it just isn't fast enough to kill at a respectable rate. You'll level much faster just tanking blue mobs down and resting in-between.

If you can't afford the truly best but can suit up in things like FBSS, Lammies, standard twink gear and maybe an Ikky BP, you'll be able to solo to 30 with relative ease and to 40 if you're determined. After 40, you'd still be able to kill mobs but it would become really inefficient leveling, like with any melee class short of a fear-kiting shadowknight. You'll still be generally capable of soloing a blue mob, but your health and mana sustainability would just kill your xp/hour.

You can kite shit with a bow and dots. As with a lot of classes, rangers are able to kill stuff like that, but it's so slow and dreary that it's pretty much not worth doing. Like trying to level a cleric by root-nuking. Possible, but you're just better off looking for a group or not playing. We're talking many minutes per kill, and then time spent medding up afterwards, clicking your Tolan's bracer endlessly, and so on. Don't bother.

Rangers were awesome in PoP.. I'm definitely playing one if that happens, but I think at the moment they're not really up to par with other dps classes.
