Default Power Leveling?

I played classic, as some of you know...back in 99, got to a 50 Rogue before Kunark...was hell getting there. Anyway to the point...how do you PL in EQ, specificially on this server. I know you can get someone to give you a very powerful damage shield and just go crazy with any class...is there any other way that is generally accepted as extremely efficient? I just want to know what I can do to help people Power Level, or what I can ask for to help me get up to 50-60 range faster. Currently leveling my Iksar Monk to 50 to help get my Dwarven Rogue some good starting gear...but the task is daunting and I've had someone give me a high level thorns once or twice, and that makes thing atleast bearable...although not extremely fast.

So whats the generally agreed upon way to PL a char?

I don't really understand the question.

If you're referring the best way to get your monk levels quickly asking for a DS/Regen is the way to go. Best to fight stuff that doesn't run and if possible get the buffs in a zone that has a nice exp modifier. Later haste/regen for you and slows for the mob in a duo-situation is the best way to "Powerlevel" a melee as the effect of thorns doesn't scale great.

Of course with a duo there are better ways to PL someone. Monks can kill it to like 1% and FD for the n00b to get the kill. Snare/fear while you beat on it. Kill it to almost dead and zone. High level player aggros the mob with a high taunt spell and uses a DS, then you hit it once and when the mob dies you get the exp (as DS dmg doesn't count towards the kill).

Long duration buffs will make your earlier begging levels easier. Regen lasts longer than thorns, Natureskin from a high level druid lasts over an hr and has a little regen, etc.

As Snaggles said, the fastest way to get "PLed" as a newbie for free is to get buffs from druids, shamans, and magicians. The most important ones are SoW, regen, and a damage shield.

The fastest way to get PLed, period, is to pay a high level monk or necromancer. They get the mob down to almost dead and fleeing, then feign death and you finish it off. Huge EXP very quickly. PLing in this manner is sold at a rate of about 1,000 platinum an hour. This is at low levels - at high levels, what people sometimes do is pay to be grouped with a powerful max-level soloer (generally a magician or a necromancer) and go afk while the other person kills mobs. The person needs to be high enough to be able to EXP in a group with the other person, but at high levels this can be a high level difference (37 with a 50, or 40 with a 60).

you definitely did not play a character to 50 if you don't know how PL works.

i think it's been said to you before, but a monk is a terrible choice of character to try to build a nest egg on.

If you get your monk to a high level by just grinding, then it is an EXCELLENT choice to build a nest egg on, since you can make 1-2k an hour power leveling, being one of the best power leveling classes in the game.

that's true. i missed the part where he mentioned he actually intended to get to 50. but he'll be scraping for a long while.

it just seems like a massive waste of time to play one character to 50 just so you can twink another character that you really want to play, more so when the former character is slightly gear-intensive (weapons, anyway).

i mean, get a cheap ass PSD and a suit of banded and a rogue will group just fine.

Thanks for the replies, I don't mind wasting some time to get the Monk to a higher level, I actually dinged 12 tonight with some help from a Druid friend...wasn't bad at all...and it's starting to open up as a decent class now with a faster cooldown move at 10 and block at 12...it's not so terrible.

I was saying I wanted to eventually get my Rogue up, cause my first character in a 3D MUD/MMO was a Rogue on Innoruuk...I had played Legends of Kesmai and Ultima Online prior to my guild moving to EQ...so my very first MMO character was indeed a Halfling Rogue, was just trying to make him over again (Cept Dwarf this time) and relive the old days without so much pain during the leveling process...

Playing a Monk first is less torture for me, well it was rough to start..but now at 12, it's not so bad...I figure I can handle it now from here with alittle help here and there...I mean if any of you guys out there want to help out an old head from so long ago by twinking out my new Rogue to make the leveling process less painful and drab feel free to let me know. I don't intend to play the Monk forever unless I fall in love with it in 50+ game...which me being such a fan of backstab and daggers...prolly won't happen. I'm just trying to set myself up with a bit of a headstart...sure I coulda done a Mage or Necro I guess and been even better at grinding and leveling myself...but I wanted to actually be able to be in the thick of things in melee, and help a group...yes Rogue would have been able to do that, but not till atleast 15-20 and having a decent piercer.

Yanno, I might actually be totally wrong...this server is alot different than oldschool 1999 EQ Live...I mighta been able to roll a Rogue to start with and actually find a group, but my experience back when I was 15 years old or so was NO ONE ever grouped with a Rogue, EVER...and soloing was pure hell...getting to 50 was a long and ardous journey where I finally got an SBD in my mid 30s....and then finally I think I landed a Bone Razor toward the end of my career...it was no cake walk, it sucked...and took so much of my time...I figured coming here I'd try something slightly different with the Monk being as he's less reliant on a mainhand weapon...so that's my story. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY MY ROGUE, I just dont wanna go through that whole process of pure torture sitting in zones for hours LFG...and never ever getting a group even if I sat there for 2+ hours...without good twink gear I would have to suffer all over again. My Rogue in retail couldn't solo to save an ants life let alone his own. When I finally got an SBD and some good armor in my 30s it got a bit easier, and I started to find a group more often, it got easier in the late 40s...but still, getting to 30 purely solo as a Rogue in 1999...I don't ever wanna do it again.

My first character on the server was a mage, because I knew I wanted to play a warrior. It makes sense to want your character, especially one that is very gear dependant, to have better then cloth armor or even banded, for the first 15-20 levels. Leveling a character like a rogue is infinitely more fun when you're doing it with better then average gear.

Play the farming toon till 50ish, when you have the money to buy the gear for your rogue, then play the rogue till 60. You now have a toon you can farm money with and a toon you can raid with.

I'm not sure I'd choose monk as the farming class. I think at this stage of the game, enchanter or necro is a better option. Both fun classes to play, both can farm named or seafuries to make a solid amount of plat regularly. Plus the whole switching from one melee dps class to another melee dps class seems a bit redundant.
