Default DDOS costs are going down

Is this:

Criminals have gotten better at hacking into unsuspecting computers and linking them together into so-called botnet networks, which can then be centrally controlled. Botnets are used to send spam, steal passwords, and sometimes to launch DDoS attacks, which flood victims' servers with unwanted information. Often these networks are rented out as a kind of criminal software-as-a-service to third parties, who are typically recruited in online discussion boards.

DDoS attacks have been used to censor critics, take down rivals, wipe out online competitors and even extort money from legitimate businesses. Earlier this year a highly publicized DDoS attack targeted U.S. and South Korean servers, knocking a number of Web sites offline.
Quote:
DDoS attacks may have cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars per day a few years ago, but in recent months researchers have seen them going for bargain-basement prices.

Nazario has seen DDoS attacks offered in the US$100-per-day range, but according to SecureWorks Security Researcher Kevin Stevens, prices have dropped to $30 to $50 on some Russian forums.
Web 3.0 anyone? What's the solution? If software was run remotely on vast server farms and people's computers couldn't get infected, might this eliminate botnets (and piracy)? This kind of illicit activity will force the system to change, and it might change in ways many people won't like.

Makes me wonder... if the person launching a DDoS attack is hitting our servers, are they paying the $30-60 a day to do it? What joe-shmoe has the expendable cash to blow on DDoS attacks just get "lulz"? I just can't imagine wasting that much money per-day on something so stupid. I just don't get it.

And regarding the BlockDOS.net -- I wonder if we could use a service like that for the server and eliminate DDoS attacks? Looked like about $350 / year? Might be worth it if the community can get behind it.

the cost is to hire someone to do it for you...if you are tech savvy you can do it yourself for free.

ddos software is sketchy. if you noticed, for example, our current datacenter brags on its homepage that it employs ddos software...any one of us can see how effective it has been.

the only thing, imo, that really deters someone from doing these types of activities online is fear that they may get caught. The FBI DOES investigate ddos attacks...and it DOES have the technology and manpower to track someone down through the zombie IPs to a real person.

The odds, however, of the FBI using any resources on project1999 is slim. We do not "make money" so when our servers go down we aren't losing money---like real businesses do who go to the FBI. We aren't a government agency, nor do we provide some essential service for our clients.

We are a free game server. This puts us about as far down the food chain in terms of criminal activity as you can get. Our attacker, therefore, has no real fear of being caught...no matter how often or how uncleanly he launches the ddos.

The only hope we really have is to play a cat and mouse game with him...we increase our security...he increases his efforts to get though....

OR, we can only hope he comes to his senses and realizes that the people he is punishing are not the people he has an issue with. If Rogean closes down the project who loses?

Its the hundreds of players that built a meaningful community in cyberspace who are being hurt. If the ddos'er is reading the boards I hope you think about this for a little bit.

Clearly the person responsible isn't rational, what's to be gained from doing this?

He/she will probably get tired and move on eventually.

You can't rationalize with irrational script kiddies raging out with undirected anger over them being spanked.

The bitch will move on sooner or later. The longer they keep it going, the more likely they'll be caught.

And I don't know about you, but I'd jerk off to the idea of them going to jail, or one of us finding who they are and where they live.

So someone can do something stupid and go to jail for harassing some 14 year old kid? I guess you could tell their parents what he is doing but I doubt they would understand.

No, but the government would and they would go to jail for a very long time.

The likelihood they are just some 14 year-old kid is not very high. While getting your hands on a botnet of infected zombies to initiate such an attack isn't particularly difficult, the chances it's some kid isn't likely.

It's also possible this guy isn't even related to eqemu at all. (though unlikely since we've already been hit by one of these faggots before, and they were someone banned)

I doubt they would go to jail for DDOSing an EQ emulation server. The feds would probably pass on the case unless it was a high profile or corporate target or unless they feel they can make an example out of this person, this means it would be passed down to state. Depending on the state(if this person is even in the US) and their case load, they would probably just plea out with probation. Hell, ask any DA in NY what a DDOS is and they will probably look at you like you are crazy. Not many people do time for ddos, I would love to see that change but it isn't taken as seriously as ID theft. at least from what I have seen.
