Default Enchanter - Charming

So how exactly does charming work? What should I be charming? Blues and killing other blues? Just looking for some tips on charming with an enchanter for leveling.

Thanks.

there's really two kinds of charming: charming in a group, where you will be keeping your pet a while, and your charmed pet will not be taking damage, for the express purpose of adding dps. and also, solo charming, where your pet will be taking damage, and ideally you will get the kill shot and exp from your pet in a few kills.

charming in a group is extremely simple. charm a pet, sic him on whatever the tank is attacking, get exp. when charm breaks you will probably CC your pet and recharm him.

charming solo is an art. dealing with breaks while soloing requires some finesse. at higher levels, when dealing with summoners, you will have to be able to CC both mobs simultaneously or you will die very quickly. at lower levels, it's good enough to just root one mob and put some distance between you and the fight.

the pet exp nerf is the biggest obstacle to soloing. my recommendation is that instead of trying to adjust your technique to mitigate this, you should simply group up with someone to mitigate the penalty. if you want to rough it yourself, in order to get full exp you have to break the charm on your pet before you kill anything.

Well I'm 21, and really would like to charm to level solo when I can't group. Any suggestions as to what and where would be good? I play on Red.

charm soloing on red is tricky business because someone can walk up and ruin your day

solo charming, like i said, can get rough. and the penalty is extremely annoying to deal with. at that level, i charm soloed in upper guk around the lower guk zone line. the basic flow is simple:

find an adequate pet (this should be dark blue to you, but NEARLY turning light blue. e.g. the lowest dark blues possible).
mez your pet, sit for 2 ticks, tash and charm him. park him in a safe area.
find an adequate target. pull with a 5 dmg nuke (do NOT pull with tash, you want your charm to be able to peel your pulled mob instantly).
when your pet has safely engaged, root and tash your target. ideally, you want your pet to win the fight but just barely. there's a couple of tools you can use here, such as hasting your pet, dsing your pet, and slowing the uncharmed mob. you should generally do it in that order, as slowing the uncharmed mob is essentially nerfing your killing rate.

if you did everything right, both your pet and your charmed pet should be near death. you need to break charm before killing in order to claim full exp for both of your kills. there's no safe way to do this in a dungeon, you must invis yourself or hide, CC your pet while he is nomming on your face, and then kill both mobs with a dot or nuke.

if you did something wrong and one mob has a lot of life left, you will have to charm a new pet to kill the other mob. this can be awkward and hard to adjust. generally speaking, getting more than 1 add will mean death, so it's best to CC everything as best you can and gate.

also, i cannot overstate how much easier this is with a shaman, druid, or cleric as a partner. as soon as you get crack, you should go out of your way to give these classes crack. ask if they want to duo. make friends with them.

Enchanter Charming - Charm a white-yellow mob and send your pet at another similar level mob (if you have to, root your pets target to force it to hit your pet). When both mobs are as low as possible, but near the same health (either with you DDing one, or backing your pet off), invis. Then kill them both for 100% xp. Meditate as your pet fights the mob, so you always have full mana.

Druid Charming - Charm a blue con, or even light blue con pet. This spell costs a good chunk of mana, and you want it to last full duration. Snare a yellow con mob and dot it to make it pissed at you. Run around as your pet beat the mob down. Meditate when you have distance from the mob.

Bard Charming - Grab as many mobs as it takes to beat one down to 10% life in ~12 seconds. Charm 1, send it at the other mobs. When your pet is a few seconds away from being at 10% life, sing invis. Now run around your old pet and DoT it. Repeat on the next pet while grabbing another mob for your pack. This is called Swarm kiting and does not work on Red99 (they added code so that mobs don't switch agro to the nearest target, to help prevent training).

EDIT: Out of curiosity, can bards swarm kite on p99 blue, or is the same training code there as well? I was pretty irritated when I realized that I cannot swarm kite Hill Giants.

there's always a surplus of druids, the trick is convincing them that charming with you is faster exp than quadding once every 10 minutes.
