Default Starting Out: Suggestions?

So I have a 30mage from about a year ago I was using to progress on this server but ended up quitting due to college and such. Looking to come back and start fresh. I do have about 350-400plat to help the new character out a bit.

Anyone have any suggestions for breaking into P99? I heard that pet classes leveling were nerfed significantly with their must deal 50% of dmg to a monster to get full xp. Was thinking of starting a Monk or Warrior (my two fav classes) but wondering if there are enough players still leveling or any leveling guilds in order to get through the content, or are most players maxed and lower areas ghostyards?

Warriors are very gear dependent, so I'd only suggest them if that's the class you REALLY want to play. Otherwise, you'll get much more naked mileage out of the mage you already have.

If you want to make a new melee character, this is actually my suggestion: level the mage to 34 and spend 10 hours killing hill giants first. The platinum you make off that alone will be more than the rest of your characters to level 30 combined.

At that point you can get a few key pieces of melee gear and fill out the rest of your slots if needed with cheap/effective equipment. And then any time you get a little short on cash, out comes the 34 mage.

There is plenty of low level activity / groupage available u have no worries there -- both people leveling up alts/rerolls and new blood to the server. I just leveled up a character to the mid 30's and had no problems getting groups in crushbone / unrest / mistmoore even during the off-peak hours when I normally play.

And 300-400pp is plenty to get started with a meelee -- heck a sword of skyfire and a set of bronze or banded and yur set right -- but the other posters are right a little bit of farming cash on your mage could go a long way to gearing your monk or warrior.

I play a mage, and as the exp is a bit slower there are still ways around it (reclaim pet before mob death). If you dont want to play your mage that's another thing entirely, but don't let that scare you from the class. If you want to farm some plat, Sisters in OOT is 22pp every 6-7 minutes (as long as you can get the camp). Made several k plat just leveling here.

If you start a monk, I have some spare wu's lying around you can have. Really, play the class you want. That's what is going to keep you interested. All you need for a monk is a good weapon like WQS and two plat fire wedding rings, and that'll get you started. I've never had trouble finding a group as a monk if the soloing scene wears on you.

I've been playing my bard twink a bit and I was shocked to be grouping in crushbone with mostly new players. Several times I was the only twink in the group. For whatever reason (diablo 3 getting old?) we seem to have gotten a big influx of new players recently.

This seems like the path I should take. Was farming HHK guards at 30 but HG's would be faster I believe. The mage could kill halfling guards too I guess but I cant remember their level.

At 34 with the fire pet focus wep and minimal gear could that mage take HG's? And if so where would you guys recommend leveling him to 34 at?

Really appreciate all the replies. =)

Yes, definitely.

You could level to 34 in any of the normal areas that were put forth in the thread already.

I'm pretty sure the mage could handle HG's- you may need to chain summon a few pets. In my opinion the best place to level from 30-34 and reliably find a group for it is as the Castle Entrance camp in Mistmoore.
