Default How should I experience live EQ?

I've been loving p99 the last month and will continue to. But, it has made me want to reminisce in other expansions (I played through GoD) and explore all the contents since. Are there other emulated servers that are decent? Do I just play live?

Not too worried about the classic feel, just exploring the old zones and seeing the changes. Is there a quick way to do this? I plan on doing this solo, mercs are op apparently, will it be mindless grinding? I suppose I could 2 box it in the background while playing p99... Haven't really looked into this elsewhere, I figured I'd ask here first.

if you go the EQ live route, keep in mind that the Test server gives everyone free Gold Member access and free access to ALL current expansions (even the newest releases)

there's a few guilds on test doing self-imposed progression through all the expansions.

There's nothing saying you can't play multiple EQ servers at once.

I'm usually running 3-4 EQs on 2-3 servers. EQ (especially p99) is a very slow game that doesn't require tons of attention or user input - it's perfect for playing multiple characters - just not more than 1 here.

I recommend EZserver for playing and Morell Thule for dicking around. If you like PvP at all, Abacab's Crushbone Server is a lot of fun.

Is ezserver just like it sounds? Like live eq but ez? I suppose I could 2+ box w/ mercs to speed things up more...but I'm not really looking to play play....I suppose the dream would be getting to fight through every dungeon once. Without the grinding etc. Just to see it.

Test server sounds cool, free is nice. I remember when it came out and they did the first wipe of it, people were maaaad.

EZ stands for Enhanced Zones, not for easy mode [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

The people who invented the first space ships were brilliant. That doesn't mean anybody should actually want to use them 200 years later. Ideas are limited by means of execution. Everquest has amazing ideas that need to be completely reworked in their execution, in order for classic Everquest as it was envisioned to actually exist and continue to be relevant as things have evolved.

bah...
Well, test server is looking pretty good, I found this:

Friendly reminder for those that do not know or may have forgotten. The test server is F2P and comes with perks that usually require an active paid subscription (you get full GOLD Membership).

PERKS

Full content unlocked including all expansions (equivalent of paid subscription on live servers + expansions free).
You can make up to 8 characters per account on Test.
No limitations on Mercs, so as a F2P player you can get the journeyman mercs on test (you have free Gold Membership)
Test Server is always ongoing, so never wipes.
Test receives all new content and expansions weeks before regular servers.
Serverwide DOUBLE EXP! This applies to LOTD & Hotzones as well so you can effectively get 8x EXP!!
Ability to copy over ANY existing toon from ANY server by logging in and typing /testcopy! The only limit is once every 8 hours, so just keep copying over an alt with all your cash and special items on it and you will never have cash problems in game
Leveling is really fast, you actually see your EXP bar move when you kill stuff (not like days of old when it took 3 days of hardcore playing to get 5% EXP, lol)
Ability to instantly level any new level 1 character to level 25 will a full suit of armor and all spells/songs for that class by typing /testbuffme.
Immediate unlock of ALL veteran reward AA's. Your account doesn't need to be from 1999 to get all of the beneficial veteran AA's!
Decent sized player activity results in enough people on to usually find a group but not so many people on that certain things are perma camped.
There are raiding guilds on Test.
Multiboxers are welcomed and not harassed.
You can be power leveled from level 26-100 in 1 day by friends or guildies.
