so theres this pc in my basement with winxp sp3 running on it. i got a minecraft server as the only thing running on it aside from wifi drivers, fresh install. when i scanned the machine for tcp/udp in ncat, it told me that the only port open is this one for minecraft. any idea how i can send a shut down command without going downstairs?

i tried to use telnet on the open server port but it failed. im really uneducated at this stuff and would like to be able to figure it out. any hints/suggestions?

ive seriously looked all over.. i cant seem to figure out how to do anything but telnet in, and port 23 is closed

Umm you just want to turn it off without going downstairs? Put teamviewer on it.

well its too late now, but if i wasnt so comfortable i would have just gone downstairs and enabled telnet. i was wondering is there a way to brute-force open a port or something over a network when all the ports are closed. they say windowsXP is insecure, but i couldnt find a way to penetrate the system.

mostly im just interested in learning more about how this type of stuff is done. it it a requirement that one must install a vulnerability on the machine in order to exploit, or are there any practices that come with fresh install?
