Welcome! I haven't played a bard much, but if you didn't get to this page on the wiki, it has some guides: http://wiki.project1999.com/Players:Adventure

Well, there are two common routes to go as a bard: solo mass kiting, or standard group play.

If you're kiting, you'll enjoy the best EXP possible in the game and take down entire zones at once. The downsides are numerous: people will resent you if you're not careful about where you pull monsters from, it is very very easy to screw up and die, it can be tiring on your hands, and it will leave your ability to play a bard otherwise undeveloped (both in terms of things like melee skills in-game and your own ability to understand how the class is played).

If you're grouping, you'll enjoy playing one of the most useful, adaptable, and complex group characters in the game. The downside is that it's not always easy to find a group, especially when you have a 40% EXP penalty that affects the group you're in as well. You need to be proactive about finding groups, and try forming your own group if possible.

Personally I would recommend the second option since you'll come out a more useful and knowledgeable player. One thing I would do to start off with is make eight song macros with just the following two lines:
/stopsong
/cast #
Where "#" has each of the numbers 1 through 8. This will let you twist songs with one button press rather than two, since it lets you easily stop your current song and immediately start another song. This is a big deal since it will basically half the number of button presses you need to make - as a bard you're pretty busy as is. Generally speaking you should always be twisting three songs when you're in a group, assuming all three songs are actually useful. Sometimes you can kind of twist four songs, but all four will not reliably hold all the time. Be ready to swap out instruments on the fly to get maximal effects from each song if necessary, and don't forget to melee as well if it's worthwhile to do so instead of using instruments.

The bard is possibly THE most complex class in the game so it's hard to give tips for it without writing an essay. Basically, just pay attention to each song you learn, and be ready to apply whatever is most useful to the group you're currently in; you need to be aware of what other classes are in your group and what abilities they bring to the table that overlap your own, so you can do things that they are not already managing. Your main roles are generally going to be pulling and crowd control, but you also have extremely useful buffing/debuffing capabilities, can heal a bit, can regenerate your groupmates' mana, and can tank in a pinch.
