Cannot run in full screen mode

I tried searching but I can't find how to resolve my problem. I'm using the ATI 4890 with Windows 7, and when I try to run full screen mode, it turns black and sometimes outright crashes the game. I can run in windowed mode but I prefer full screen.

Is this a common problem?

i have this same problem. I also use an ATI card (4650) and windows xp.

Same problem on a ATI 5770. Windowed mode is superior anyway.
