Default Ensnaring Roots vs Enveloping Roots

Enveloping Roots has a duration of 1min, and Ensaring Roots has a duration of 1.4minutes. Ensnaring also costs 20m less.

Why then would I use the higher mana cost Enveloping Roots? I know the DD does a bit more damage, and the cast time is shorter, but I feel like the root doesn't last long enough as is, when root rotting. Isn't my best friend duration?

Depends what you're doing, but generally for root rotting you want duration. Bless the 3 min necro root [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I'd use the cheaper one that lasts longer. By the time you can cast enveloping roots, ensnaring roots lasts 1:36 .... the other lasts a flat 60 seconds.

The benefit of Enveloping Roots is you have a better damage/mana ratio (not a big deal) and a faster cast time (potentially a much bigger deal).

On my shaman I still end up using my level 14 spell:

Reasonably fast cast time and dirt cheap on mana. Lasts less than a minute but it doesn't really matter much because my dots have a DD component that can randomly break roots.
