I had pre nerf ones too and they do eventually poof..key word "had"

Skipping stones would add how ever many ammo slot items you had at the time to their usage. Once they are all spent the item disappears.

There is no such thing as "pre-nerf" ones, they just have an unseen client side ammo limit.
