First you wanna probably reformat/reboot the phone to more or less wipe it clean of any types of security software stuff, then you probably want to take the battery/sim card out and leave it off for a while before you do anything. You are technically in posession of stolen property worth atleast a misdemeanor in new york. As far as "unlocking" it goes I couldn't tell you. I would just find someone to sell it to who does know, though.

Couple of hundred bucks is better than getting arrested for a piece of shitty chinese plastic.

Seriously I agree the noble thing to do would be return it. They may even give you some cash if you're lucky. Lets not try to pretend that humans are naturally good though, most people cheat, lie, steal, etc. Its human nature, sadly.
