Why does everyone keep calling a single necklace "a pair"?

It is a single item. it isn't a pair of earrings.

Beaded necklaces are an item where it's common to use "pair" even if there are not two of them, but composed of parts, like pants, glasses, scissors, pliers, etc. For instance, it's common say, "Pair of rosary beads."

All of those make sense except the beads, since all except the beads consist of two main parts except the beads which are many. In what dialect does someone refer to a necklace of beads as a pair? It would make sense as a set.

If this doesn't clear it up for you, let me know.

D: That is precisely my point. If the necklace consists of two beads that makes sense, but most necklaces including rosaries have many more than two beads.
