Ironically my whole family works for a General Dynamics plant and only live in this area because of said plant. But the way it was explained to me is that they have these plants spread out because when they lobby it gives them a way to force politicians to vote in their favor. IE. You can't vote against jobs in your own area - what would your constituents think !

(Hopefully this isn't political since I consider to be pretty partisan).
