Default Photography Thread

-Ansel Adams

This thread is for people to:
  • post photographs they created
  • give honest critique of photographs posted
  • discuss photography in general
If you post a picture here, please expect honest criticism even without permission, since that is a stated purpose of this thread. That being said, let's keep this thread free of idiot trolls.

I'm mainly creating this thread so I can post my pictures and get some people to tell me how bad they are and why in the hopes that I will become a better photographer. I had thought to just post a thread with a bunch of my pictures, but it occurred to me that several of you guys are probably amateur photographers and would probably enjoy that too, hence this thread.

Please don't plagiarize here, if you absolutely must post photographs by other people, at least credit them as above.

That cactus blooms only once a year, and only if the summer is hot enough.

Totally dig the cactus pictures, man.

I'm far from a photographer, more like "just a guy with a camera", who generally shies away from it, yet carries a camera around on occasion "just in case". These are a few pictures from those "just in case" moments.

Ozarks Expedition last year - Buffalo National River Valley:

Ouachita National Forrest on a 3 day run last year as well:

Some of you guys have already seen this one. Taken by a friend:

Tropical storms and hurricanes kinda suck, especially when you're 115 miles away from shore. Tropical Storm Humberto - 2007 - Gulf of Mexico:

Taken by a friend much more talented than I:

Oh, and one more. I didn't take this one, in fact I have no idea who took it, but I liked it so much it is now framed on my wall at home. Cenote in Mexico:

This is in the Blue Mountains in Australia. I have a huge boner to go climb there next time I am back. I have some great pictures of a slot canyon I hiked in Arizona but I fail at uploading things.

good sir, allow me to fluff your boner. I have a couple of dodgy phone pix from the blue mounts, and some slightly better quality ones from some mounts nearby.

I am a certified photographer (Formally educated)

My opinion;

1st pic has alot of issues, first of all the umbrella is very distracting even with selective focus it is very noticeable (probably a result of the contrast of no color (the flower) to orange (the umbrella). The cactus is the subject and therefore should be larger (i.e. take up more space in the photo). 1/5

2nd pic is better, proper use of selective focus and the umbrella is hardly noticeable. The subject is in the rule of thirds. Much more detailed image of the subject although I would've like to have seen more of it (you cut it off the top, which could have just been a poor choice of crop) But overall not bad. 3/5

Stay at it and you'll train your "shooters eye" for better composition.

Yay photography thread! I recently picked up a new lens that I hope to take out a buuunch!

Messing around with the new lens.

I had my first shot at 'sports photography' last weekend. It was a lot of fun. The shots come out hilarious because their faces and/or bodies are usually twisted in strange ways.

The Balloon Fiesta is this week in ABQ. Getting up at 4am tomorrow to watch about 700 balloons ascend. Should be a great photo op!

What kind of cameras do you guys use? I have a Nikon D90 with a few additional lenses.

Shanna, I reaaaally like your last one there, with the cocktail and pack of smokes in the background. Being at work at the moment, staring at that picture for about 30 seconds causes the stress to drain away.

Thanks! Was trying to mess with the effect of having the back all blurry.

Those are cards, not smokes btw. Lol ~
