Watergate was a scandal which exposed illicit activity that made the public feel betrayed. You made up your own definition for the suffix "-gate", but your definition sucks. Just because you don't care about football doesn't mean this is an inappropriate nickname.

Football is a
family of sports, and referring to any of them as 'football' is appropriate within the right context.
