Leveling the same, sitting at 20 now. I love the experience of starting in halas/ef. Fight and level your way to the gnoll fangs in blackburrow. I did that until 12. Then bandit sashes until 17.
If you run to the druid rings in karana, chances are good someone will be around porting. In my experience, they've been happy to take whatever I could spare or even give it to me. I'm bound in fp now and did 17-20 in oasis. Not sure where I'll go now but the leveling guide on the p99 wiki seems helpful.
Oh and do the testament of vanear quest, such a great cheap piece.

This. Especially for folks either brand new, or relatively new (like you). It gives you a chance to learn (relearn) the game.

That's safe advice, although the mob density in some of the starting zones is rather poor, so in some cases it does make sense to move to another starting area.

I'd recommend non-evil erudites hop on the boat to Qeynos, for example. (If you're an enchanter, stock up on Tiny Daggers first though.) The Qeynos newbie yard is much better than Toxxulia. Similarly, it can make sense as a dark elf to make the run to the Freeport yard.

I started a Shaman recently myself. A friendly wood elf pointed out that if you collect the Wooly Fungus off spiderlings, you can turn them in for level 5 spells (8 fungus per spell) from an NPC just outside the Shaman guild.

(Edit) One of the reward spells is your first DoT - Sicken, which saves you a run into the higher level area of the zone, making it a much safer way to acquire that spells. Hope this helps and have fun!

didnt read all replies but hands down a million times, qeynos is best starting area. your shaman will be fine. just remember these:

gnoll fangs (xp)
rabid pelts (xp and spell money)
bandits (xp and great money for a teen)
greater light stones (xp and great money)

No other starting city has anything close to available.
