It's always been this way, though. Guild X is #1 and guild Y forms to dethrone Guild X (usually encompassing lots of mergers). That was TMO's history and same with DA's. In fact, we can go all the way back to Fish Bait with that little buttmunch Salty and it was like that as well.

Fish Bait may be an exception here, as it was basically a zerg force back then -- or at least what amounted to a zerg force considering how low the population was.

DA was a fork off Fish Bait led by Durison. DA also went through a couple of mergers as well, iirc. WI, Eminence? Don't remember the others.

And I'm sure TMO was made compete with TR/IB; the latter guild also consisted of a couple of mergers (IB came to divinity to merge after they imploded)

Oddly enough, Fish Bait is probably the only exception here :P
