That's like saying I deserve credit for curing cancer because I've decided to find the cure for cancer. I have no clue how and I'll certainly never actually manage to do it, but I've made the altruistic decision to want to do it. I could even study biology and chemistry for four years and probably make something vaguely resembling the very first stages of a potential cure, but if I never get any further than that, I haven't done shit and don't deserve any fucking praise.

Volunteer project as a hobby, not paid for by grants/no salary. You can't compare compare a cure for cancer to a hobby that deals with rebuilding a game. Go back to school.
