CGI are horrible effects. Everything looks fake with CGI. The only thing you are immersed into is a plastic world with poor dialog , horrible acting, and nonsensical plots. Look at Tron Legacy. Movie looked great but was a complete bore compared to the original and the original actually looked better to me. People want more than just something new to look at.
You mention books and some of my favorites are being made into movies which will most likely be abortions (Neuromancer, Snow Crash, Brave New World). They cant even take a comic book which is already in a storyboard format and do that right much less a novel. They have to change crap around to get that "mass appeal" that just dumbs everything down. Its like MMORPGS, you need more than shiny graphics to make a good game.
