Something you don't understand or choose not to accept is the fact that the griefers and twinks your so worried about don't relevel. So with the xp bonus if your in range more than a day or 2 then your doing it wrong. They also don't travel normally unless you piss them off so if they are in Unrest you go elsewhere. It is the same with MM or SolB or whatever.

You have to deal with them each time you level a new toon but you level so much faster than you do on blue fighting for mobs.

Pretty much this. MM/unrest have been the gank hotspots in my short experience on red so far. Stay away if it really scares you that much, but a good group in MM can crush 20-30 in a few hours, so even if you were hit a few times you're in the clear soon.
