Game Mechanics: Swimming Skill Raises

I usually get a few points at the docks in BB while waiting on the boat. Auto-run against one of the posts...No EB item and no breathing bar. I guess it's like running on the shoreline. But then again I do get stuck on the posts sometimes. It doesn't seem to up fast but even when I do swim gaining points is rare.
