Managed to do it at level 5. Don't you get the scythe either way (mad Lempeck) or no? I opened the trade window, turned around and opened the door and started running as I clicked "give". Maybe I just got lucky and didn't have the "bad" potion. Didn't bother asking anyone to identify it for me.
I was also coming from the Freeport side so the run was a bit easier. Waited in highpass for the orcs to run off and attack guards, and then DA'd through the gnoll area. On my third run-through that is... First time, I forgot to turn in the honeycombs first, and second time DA faded just as I hit the zoneline so I died.
