I have not experimented with this, but I thought you needed to charm a mob in order for it to equip the equipment you gave it. Does Feign Death play a role in this strategy or is it just to avoid dying and you can actually give equipment to any non-KoS mob and it will equip it?

It’s kinda wacky, some mobs only equip when charmed, other mobs will equip even if you’re KoS. You can slow Tunare by trading her a ton of -MR gear, she will equip it. I have given CT fishing poles several times in the past and he equips them. Someone gave Vindi an earthen blade once and he was proccing haste on himself. Some mobs, like skeletons, straight up never equip items you give to them uncharmed even if you use an enchanter faction spell. Non-charmed mobs will not drop items you give to them, but they will noticeably equip and utilize them.
