Fading Nameplates?

So I recently got back from a long hiatus (little over a year) and one thing I noticed on my bard that has been quite problematic is mobs nameplates, I can only see the names over a mobs head if I am close.

I recall seeing nameplates from great distances before my break. is there a way to change this? was this a "not classic" fix?
