![]() I just started rolling as a Ranger. Alot of the times when I announce that I'm looking for a group, people will start talking trash about the Ranger. Why is that? Whats wrong with them?

![]() Most groups don't want -40% added into a group for a dps class when they could grab another class for that.
Rangers have a lot of skills to max, which make them prob one of the hardest classes to play. Gear them right, and they're excellent dps, and utility. I wish I rolled one instead of a pal to be honest. Sow and track prob a lot more useful than 0% res. Can't wait for expansions.

![]() People deem Paladins and Rangers useless in Classic.
I like Pallys though! | ||

![]() Paladins can tank better than Rangers and I'd rather have lay on hands than track I think. Track is really nice of course but not while leveling really. It's more useful for farming, at least that's my opinion.
Rangers aren't worthless they just sort of lack a niche. There are other classes that can DPS better, and Ranger utility is typically covered by the millions of Druids and Shamans out there. If Druid wasn't as popular a class at it is, Rangers would have much more utility because a well-played ranger can CC pretty decently with root and snare since they aren't going to be using their mana for much else.

![]() TBH? Most of us who played eq in classic, know, the rest just are sheep. And the teasing comes from classic players, real trashing of rangers and your class wouldn't come from anyone mature or knowledgeable. The fact is the ranger class really didn't come into it's own until Planes of power I believe. You won't be able to tank, and there are many other options for dps, rangers don't get that bow dps for many expansions.
I wouldn't say I feel sorry for rangers, but I grouped with many a good ranger, and it just sucked their class was underpowered. A skilled player can still perform well, and make the toon useful though. Anyway, play what you want man. Some people discriminate against classes in their group, if they see a ranger lfg, and have a dps spot open, they won't invite. Those people I wouldn't want to group with anyway. Play what you want, get used to the ribbing though, and teasing. Just ignore it when it becomes more then that Also, you have alot of min/maxers now, we learned from 1999 on, what race/classes work best. You can't fault someone for playing the ogre war, instead of say a human, or a necro instead of a ranger now... I have a good friend who rerolled a warrior in 199 when he couldn't kill blues at lvl 3X on his ranger... like everyone else. And he just joined p99 as an ogre war, instead of the human war, or the wood elf ranger. Blah, bottom line play what you enjoy mate.

![]() You didn't see a lot of ranger bashing until The Fellowship of the Ring came out, at which point every bow class in every video game became the most popular with young internet tough guys who thought Orlando Bloom was dreamy.....
This phenomenon continues to this day. A TON of imbeciles roll rangers because they want to be as cool as Legolas. The same is true of the hunter class in WoW, the hunter class (obviously) in LotRO, the archer classes in DAoC, etc. Add this to the fact that several rangers on P99 are trying to play the class the same way they played it in 2005... Truth is, there is no such thing as a bad ranger. Just bad players, the majority of which have multiple alts on which they equally suck. Having said that, if you come across a wood elf ranger named Legolias, Legolasx, Lagolass, or any douchey variation thereof, just know they WILL try to tank, they WILL need on everthing that drops, and they DO have aspirations of plundering Will Turner's booty.

Paladin begins at level 9 as far as I'm concerned, it's a question of whether one has enough patience to get there. They seem kinda silly until then.

![]() eqdruid summed it up perfectly, and even hit a few truths I never realized till he put it in words.
Also : Rangers are a lot touchier than other classes. So people rile them often just to get a reaction out of them. In truth, a lot of the animosity is based on the fact that the game has been out for over 10 years.. There are few that still don't know most of the mechanics behind it. It's painfully clear to those that do that the rangers aren't a strong pick to begin with, even without considering the silly 40% xp penalty. Can they tank? Sure in a pinch. Can they dps? Sure, and almost on par with the other dps melees. Do they bring utility to the table? Yep. Can they track? Yeah. Etc. etc. Have you ever gone into a dungeon and had the group break up because the ranger had to leave? Have you ever said "Man, if we had a ranger, we could totally go to Guk right now"? Have you ever said "Boy, I sure hope that ranger corpse gets a res" on your way to a camp? No, No, and Yes. Are they vital? Nope. If driven by a decent player, are they useful? Sure. If you had a friend starting out on the server naked, would you honestly say "Dude, you totally gotta be a ranger?" Yeaaaahh.... That's kinda the point.
