Also, expanding upon the gnome-grown theory... gnomes tinker. Maybe these are some sort of mechanical gnome cactus toys that got loose and learned to self-replicate... They only seem to fight you if you fight them first, which would go along with the self-defense only nature of ethical robotics.
Has anyone gotten close enough to one of these creatures to hear if there are any clock/gear noises coming from them? If you hear ticking that's pretty much case closed.
