would be awesome if there was a quest that would make an assassin NPC spawn somewhere near you randomly and you had to fight it or it would kill you. Then when you complete the next step of the quest it stops.
There is. It's called Red.

Let people roll a Nino. No need for npc spawns. Only spell a Nino has is a gate to all quest npc zones. Non-aggro, can't kill him but he can kill you.

Tell me this is a bad idea, with a straight face.

You do a quest, and are awarded 1 million plat. But as soon as you turn it in, a snared NPC spawns and walks towards you, and he will walk towards you always, and be able to respawn and respawn at zone lines, and if he ever gets to you, and deals 1 damage, your character is deleted.

Think they ever thought about putting in variance spawns on popular solo exp camps?
imagine if the bards had a 2.5 minute variance. or hhk guards and nobles, the chick outside of the pofear portal, gornit, grik, the chicks in surefall

would the world be a better place?
IDK what variance means, but the chick outside the PoF portal already randomly spawns into a really tough version of herself fairly regularly. On two separate characters I ran into the random tough spawn that was so rough I had to log onto a higher level necromancer to kill her. I think I made a thread or two about it before.

That kind of thinking is what killed the MMORPG genre. The game isn't supposed to be safe. NPC's should actually be hunting players down sometimes. It shouldn't even be completely safe to be AFKing in the middle of your hometown, because scripted city invasions should be a thing and cause monsters to come flooding in occasionally.
See I do agree with this in principle, but I'm not a fan of griefing and what I'm talking about is player behavior. Bards know (or should) that swarming can easily result in other people dying if they screw up. They have the insanely overpowered ability to swarm kite, but they often wield it like a kid who found his dad's gun (to quote jeff goldblum in jp), which is to say irresponsibly. MMO's ultimately need players, and getting killed while afk by a dropped swarm makes people log out.
