Does your computer run any anti-virus/malware clients that have on-access protection?
I had a few problems with this on my older work laptop until I configured both Symantec anti-virus and microsoft security essentials (MSE) for this. I would suggest adding your Everquest folder into its list of centralized exceptions. The next step beyond that is to disable it entirely to see if you notice any performance increases. Good luck!
