People sublimate their own sense of being persecuted into elaborate theories about society. Because governance and politics is always at a remove from daily practice, and yet it also presents a seeming wall of opposition to their self-proclaimed sense of freedom, people create explanatory frameworks to make sense of their own lack of control. And when events happen that don't directly impact them, but nevertheless afflict their sense of self, they create elaborate networks of connection that link back to their own lives. It is, in a way, a form of paranoid narcissism.
