With the new world quests every day - Open world PVP is 100% more legit now than it ever was with Tarrin Mill f#ckery. Legion is pretty good and Nost seems like 500 steps backwards
Legion actually seems ripe for world pvp. I love all the variations with the trinkets and other items. If only Blizzard wasn't oblivious and actually created a valuable resource to contest.

Yeah, I'd have to put almost every classic open-world mmo above vanilla wow. It's got polish, but gameplay is uninteresting. Not that it's bad, it's an ok time waster, but at least it's not bad like older wow. But most definitely I'd list UO, EQ, SWG (pre-CU), EVE above it.

WoW doesn't even really feel "open world", more like a full on themepark progression level grinder. It's early success is mainly due to the Blizzard brand name, all their existing gamers insisting Diablo be recognized as an mmo, and Blizzard cashing in on that with wow to their fans that never really played an mmo before and got hooked on their first. As wow gained subscriptions from Blizzard fanbois, it became "popular" (trendy) and more people were drawn into it thinking it was the antithesis of cutting edge gaming.

Then hoards of "mmo players" flooding the genre begging every mmo developer to either clone wow (they were bored between expansions) or revamp existing mmo's to be more like wow. The ones that listened to the fickled wow players ruined their games and/or made pathetic wow clones no one wanted.

Then when failure turned to desperation, they started cranking out F2P's trying to capture this elusive army of wow players that really only wanted wow. And when they realized that the new mmo's may not be successful in stealing away players from Blizzard, they focused on big fat whale players: the few willing to spend big money in the cash shops of F2P's and development focused primarily on such players, those bored between wow expansions. The rise and fall of mmo civilization.

Nah, I had been on Nos for several months before it was shut down, I don't think I'm going to pick it up again.

WoW was bland for sure, but it was popular for more than the name. The world was well crafted, the races the lore the combat was all well thought out and polished, but mechanically and feature-wise it was streamlined as can be. All that stuff made it great for the masses, but boring for real MMO fans.

I started my Win7 install before I left this morning. Hopefully I get home and it ready to go :3 Crossing my fingers that once I install FFXI, that I can just drop my back up in and go without having to re-patch. Come to think of it, maybe I just straight up try to run that first. Yeah... Anyway, I let you know if I need help, J ^^

More than it's name, but it was a huge contributing factor.
1. millions of existing and active Blizzard fans before the launch of WoW.
2. multi-million dollar marketing campaign, and pitched as "popular" once they had those Blizzard fans in.
3. It wasn't a half-assed put together game. After all, they copied other games.

The Blizzard fan community was crying for years for an mmo, and when it came they embraced it no matter what, and since many of them hated our mmo's.

Not speaking of all that played WoW early on of course. I mean like I played Diablo 1 and 2 some, though pretty much stopped when UO was launched. Then played both UO and EQ1. Then oh my gosh, EQ, UO, EQ2, SWG, E&B, EVE, AO, PotBS, PS1, WWIIO, CoH, I had no time for WoW lol. Played like 4 months, hated it. That was like around the time of WotLK or whatever. I played Nost to get a better feel for early WoW, which was ok... but yeah, Live is the only mmo that literally LITerally put me to sleep at the keyboard. And I'm really not a dozer at all. I don;t literally go to sleep easy and am a serious light sleeper.

But anyway, the casual nature of later wow was just awful. And all the instant gratification bells and whistles. I don't consider myself a "hard-core" type, but certainly "core", while far from casual. I can't even play modern mmo's, they are just casual trash. Played Lotro early on, from closed beta (I rarely beta), but turned to casual crap later. I adored GW2, was awesome ...the first six months until they changed it to total casual crap. Stuck with it for a while but pffff, I watched it turn into nothing from a really good game, much like SWG.

Awards: UO for it's community. Especially on Pac which was the most populated server and we built a huge RP community of PvP'ers, over 1000 people strong, including game staff. Absolute wild-west days. SWG for it's overall contribution to gaming excellence, before they turned on us with CU. Then EQ with it's PvE brutality and overall charm. EVE probably for depth (daaaang the depth), though it's turning way too casual in recent years sadly. Then maybe PS1 for it's gripping pvp action. I will forever miss my Eagle BFR (mech).

WoW? Awarded for it's adverts hehehe

I already have you down on mental note as no more than three paragraphs on a reply, along with AtG. At least you aren't on the "don't use big words" list [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
