Pending Update,

-Updated existing skill level checks for fishing to 0. This will make it possible to catch zone special items, but not likely, due to fishing skill checks.

Also, as alluded to in the comments from Albavar and mcdermit, it appears the special fish introduced in the Sept2000 and Mar2001 fishing expansions actually replaced the Fresh Fish on the table. This seems to have lasted until the Nov. 7, 2001 patch. Do you want me to collect what I've found on this, Nilbog, or do you want to leave it as is?
If you want to post the research, I will review it. One issue/risk I can think of is, if the 'special' db items replaced fresh fish, we won't know what % chance modifications were made against catching the items vs junk during this timeframe. Our server code won't look anything like what existed or exists on eqlive.

Ok, I'll see what I can put together.

In the meantime, I was looking at the zone/fish list again:
Code:

butcher Saltwater Seaweed
firiona Saltwater Seaweed
oot Saltwater Seaweed
timorous	Saltwater Seaweed
Saltwater Seaweed is certainly fishable in OoT from what we've seen. The earliest evidence for it appearing in Timorous Deep that I've come across so far is from Nov2001, shortly after the Nov. 7 patch.

Saltwater Seaweed at Allakhazam (Last updated: Tue Apr 10 12:08:45 2001):

Last night I was fishing on the dock in Timorous Deep, near the ogres, waiting for the boat to come and take me to Overthere, when lo and behold, on my line I caught what I am pretty sure was this. It looked like a pouch, and it was No Drop. I didn't know what it was until just now. Anyhow, these apparently can be found in Timorous Deep also.

Saltwater Seaweed now in TD...?

Was working my SK's fishing up while waiting on the Kunark boat, on Ogre Isle, when what appears on my cursor but a Saltwater Seaweed! And then, with a full stack of bait, I proceed to fish up 3 more (!) Egads! Now I have to hold them, get my brewing up and then get some Seafoam to make temper for my Human Cleric.

Or maybe I missed the addition... I certainly missed the boat...
The patch did mess with forage and fish tables, so there's a good chance it really was added then. Timorous Deep was one of the original zones with special catches. It seems odd that Timorous Tuna would be documented for so long, but not the seaweed.

As for it being fishable in Butcherblock or Firiona Vie, I've seen no mention of that in-era. Really the only thing I found, even out-of-era, was from the live Allakhazam page for Saltwater Seaweed. Interestingly, there is further comment of it being fishable in Timorous Deep, but still no player comment of it coming from BB or FV.

The oldest archived version of the page I could find that included all four zones was from 2002 (Last updated: Thu Sep 19 18:52:47 2002). The page also includes the following:
Quote:
Fished in any ocean zone.
This is definitely not true and calls the zone information into question, in my opinion.

A modern capture of EQTraders (the live site has been having db issues) only lists Saltwater Seaweed being fished in Ocean of Tears and Timorous Deep.

The Vindication of Jimjam Swimswam

The Nov. 7 patch removed the Barren Flounder from Erud's Crossing and replaced it with Timorous Tuna.

Timorous Tuna in Erud's Crossing

Apologies if there's a thread already started for this, but I haven't noticed any specific ones since the patch for things like this...

Anyway, I've been hanging out in Erud's Crossing a lot the last week helping a friend with the plague shark for her Ro Vambraces, and have done some fishing there both to get scales and to pass time. Besides catching a lot more junk than I used to (sandals and daggers), I have caught two kinds of fish there...Fresh Fish and Timorous Tuna. I have not gotten any Barren Flounder, the fish that is listed on the zone-specific fishing page for this zone. These are results of a few different fishing sessions, representing maybe 2-3 stacks worth of bait.

Just thought I would add I also caught Timorous Tuna in Eurd's Crossing last night (10 Dec. 01).

I don't know if others have gotten this too, but I've gotten Timorous Tuna from Wisp Isle in Erud's Crossing.

Re: To find the Barren Flounder

I pinged Yakatizma about this last week along with several other things.

I'll meander back onto Test in the next couple of days to see if the waters have been restocked yet. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I fished about 3 stacks of bait in Erud's Crossing about an hour ago...0 barren flounder (but lots of Timorous Tuna).

FINALLY...ofiicial response about the Barren Flounder

Well, I finally got an email back from Verant on the status of the missing barren flounder:

---------------------------------------------------------

Greetings,

I am sorry you are having problems with the flounder. It does indeed
appear
the fish is no longer in it's native waters. We are looking into where
the
fish have gone and hope to have some answers once that investigation is
complete.

Reboot of Erud's Crossing and TD

Hmmm... that's odd ... saw a message this morning that these two zones were being rebooted across all servers. Weren't these the zones that had something to do with Barren Flounder.

Just a thought ....

Re: Fishies!!

Day of 14, july 2002, Barren flounder are being fished correctly in uncommon "loot", but they are still here
A number of brewed essences were released with the May 8, 2002 tradeskill patch. Erud's Essence called for the Barren Flounder which drew greater attention to its absence. The book containing the recipes for these essences was Reconstructing Mythology, Notes; text can be seen here. It can be removed from P99.

So the Reconstructing Mythology book didn't exist before 2002?

That's correct. It appears the recipes were patched in a bit earlier, as players started to discover them through experimentation. I think the book itself was added in the May 8 patch.

Re: Complete Essence parts list, from Reconstructing Mytholo

Note: This was originally posted in the Pottery forum, it's a list of essences from a new book, read more about it in his post over there.

Edit: It's got those barren flounders that were a guess for the Odus essence on the list! Where the heck DO those things come from?!?

I'm not sure this is worth recreating given that it's sorted out by the end of the timeline, but this is what I found.

That may have been true a while ago, but Verant is adding all kinds of
'specialty' fish. Now, most zones do NOT drop fresh fish, they drop something
like Surefall Carp or Thunder Salmon or Bony Fish. Currently, many of these fish
are NOT directly edible and do not work with known recipes. Plus, there is the
advantage of being able to get experience by hunting bears, cats etc while
getting food, while fishing is a void.

Re: Hello and Questions

Well met!

Special fish are zone-specific. At one point, it did seem that your chance of catching zone-special fish was determined by your fishing skill, but this is no longer the case.

Many zones now have special fish. In many cases, those fish seem to have totally replaced fresh fish. You can find a list of what zones have special fish now by going to the Trade Supplies section of the site. There's a link there for the zone-specific fishies. [You must be logged in to view images. Hound Pike in Black Burrow

Hi All! I've been enjoying and gleaning info from the message boards here for a few weeks as I learned the game, and finally mastered Fishing and caught my first special fish!

While attempting to complete the Monk Orange Headband Quest, I did some fishing in the bowels of Black Burrow and caught Hound Pike exclusively with a skill of 101 to 103.

Hit rate seemed to be about the same as fresh fish elsewhere. On the other hand, I was able to sell the Pike for about 1/3 more than ordinary fresh fish. I didn't try baking with them.

I also caught some humorous comments from those getting aggro'd by gnolls as I sat there calmly fishing! Heh heh!

Got my headband, so packing up the fishing gear and looking for new waters in the Karanas ...

Good Luck to my fellow fishing fanatics!

Re: page update

You can also add a Rygorrian fish (can't remember exact name at the moment) that is fished in Eastern Wastes now. I fish while medding there and never caught one before and as of the last patch it is the ONLY type of fish I can catch there.

Re: New Fish

I was fishing in Crushbone and discovered a Boar carp. It uses the same picture as the Stonefish and it replaces the fresh fish catch. I'm not sure if it's bakeable.

Re: New Fish Found

Hmmm. Does anyone else find it odd/ill-advised to not have these unique fish -- which are otherwise quite cool -- not work in all ways as fresh fish do? (OK, maybe not the fetid bass. Yuck!)

I'd have starved if all I caught during my youth were Ak'Anon Koi, it seems.

Hopefully that'll be stage two of them adding these new fish to the game.

Re: New Fish

Found Frosty cave trout were the only fish I caught in Kael today on my giant-friendly druid (fishing skill 61). The ice worms and the greywood fishing pole sold in Kael work just like the normal bait and fishing pole, FYI.

Re: New Fish

Found Some of these, (like the gunthak makeral) have been around for a while, but most are new. Also, A new fish i just caught in the Lake of Ill Omen is the bloodfin trout, sells for 4.5 silver each to vendors with 70 charisma, is edible and i caught them every time with a skill of around 140 (can't remember exactly).
