Looks like they finally made an actual update on their front page, dated October 25th.

Quote:
Hello everyone,

We're still alive and very busy with Uthgard. Unfortunately we can't announce new big features currently, because we are still working on core stuff and bug fixing.

We are making significant progress in core stuff (source code), fixing bugs and prepare missing stuff. We hope we're able to announce more updates and news soon. We apologize that we didn't publish news for a while, however to be honest real life was rough for a while. Many of us had big real life projects or are in a transition state which has slowed down development significantly. We are (as always one might be inclined to say) hard at work though, trying to make Uthgard ready to launch again.

Unfortunately a lot of this work is also work you won't be able to notice much from a player point of view as this work mainly is rewriting huge chunks of the source code to make it:
[list=0:efglxm70]
[*:efglxm70] Easier to read and edit (results in faster bug fixing in the future)[/*:m:efglxm70]
[*:efglxm70] More efficient in execution (less bugs, and better performance)[/*:m:efglxm70][/list[You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]:efglxm70]

This also means that there really is not much we can show you of progress as it is all in the number of code lines and in server performance numbers.

We will try to announce smaller updates in a regularly timeframe, however due to the state of Uthgard as a hobby project we are unable to commit to regular updates on any steady timetable. We hope you can understand this, and keep coming back whenever we do have news. Once again, thank you for your patience!

Also please visit our Gallery for more recent screenshots!

Sincerely,

Your Uthgard Staff

Follow-up post made by another Uthgard Dev, Abydos, to further clarify what was being said in the first post.

Quote:
To restate what was said in the first post

"rewriting huge chunks of the source code"

This shouldn't be underestimated and we have previously said bad designs early on made it very difficult to patch things in the past. Some of these "past sins" make it incredibly difficult to continue. Remember DOL is a very old project now and has had many hands in the cookie jar. Also, early designs were sometimes implemented based on incomplete research or outright guesses. This lead to a patchwork quilt that made implementing "real daoc" difficult. Anyone who played the first few days after the LA styles got different procs by class knows that there was some difficulty as we worked out the kinks. This is more than, "I don't like how this is written, I'm going to make it better!" Its "There is no way to write ABC with these letters. We need to discard."

When the server is ready to go, we'll let you know. There is no "one goal" holding it up. Work continues on all fronts. -Abydos [Uthgard Dev]
